Fruits in Season: Mulberries or ” Toot” Three-Ways

I don’t really know why, but there’s something comforting about going to the market only to find fruits and vegetables that are newly in season. It must be because I’m a person who embraces change and who’s always ready to move on to the next step, refusing to sink into the same routine for too long. Little changes are thus welcomed, an example being cooking or baking with fresh fruits and vegetables.

One fruit in season this month is the Mulberry fruit or “Toot”. Mulberries are full of benefits. Packed with all kinds of vitamins and iron, they give your body energy and good health. They have the power to prevent a number of diseases and health problems, so next time you’re in the supermarket, don’t think twice and get that pack of mulberries. If you happen to live or work in Ashrafieh, you can also buy your mulberries from a man who gets them everyday from Tyre and sells them in front of Supermarket Ashrafieh.

Here are 3 ways to have mulberries:

1) As they are, or with yogurt as an afternoon snack.

2) In your morning or afternoon smoothie. You can find a delicious Mulberry Smoothie recipe here.

3) In you pancakes, replace the blueberries with mulberries. Refer to recipe #1 of this post.

Recipes, Salad Series 1 comment on Strawberry Spring Salad Mix With Sweet and Sour Dressing

Strawberry Spring Salad Mix With Sweet and Sour Dressing

Spring is definitely here, which means it’s time for salads and freshness. For those who like a nice mix of fruits and vegetables in the same bowl, this recipe is pure satisfaction. You can have it on its own as a light dinner or coupled with any type of protein you prefer. Our favorite Chef Jean made it a few weeks ago and I can tell you it was healthy and delicious. The dressing is quite special as it contains loads of vitamins, healthy sugars and high levels of nutritious benefits that are all found in poppy seeds (also potentially an anti-cancer source). We love experimenting with different kinds of dressings and this one was one of the top ones in taste and benefits. Here’s the recipe of this zestful salad.

Colorful Strawberry Spring Salad Mix

What you’ll need:

For the salad

  • Mix of greens (our choices: butter lettuce, rocket leaves, and lollo rosso)
  • 1.5 cups sliced strawberries
  • 1 cup sliced and peeled oranges
  • 1 large red onion, sliced thinly

For the dressing

  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 2 Tbsp lemon juice (preferably freshly squeezed)
  • 1 Tbsp honey
  • 1 Tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 Tbsp poppy seeds
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp ground pepper

How to make it:

  1. In a large bowl, mix the lettuce and onion slices, then decorate with the oranges and strawberries
  2. In a smaller bowl, mix all of the dressing ingredients and pour over the large bowl of salad

Serve and enjoy the mix of flavors and freshness!

*Apres la pluie le beau temps*

Have you checked the coming weekend’s weather? It sure is a promising one. Sunny, no rain, and a plan to barbecue the weekend away.
If you’re wondering what to do, here’s the perfect idea: a bunch of friends gathering around a delicious fish barbecue – with accompaniments of course.
Meet the Red Snapper, one of the tastiest fish I have ever eaten. It’s one of the most popular of all white fish. The first time I ever tasted one, we were backpacking in Sri Lanka last August. It was so delicious that we have been dreaming of it since then.

As it turns out, it can be found in Lebanon and anywhere in the world. The trick is to make sure it is a real one. You should buy your fish from someone who knows what he is selling (either buy it from the fish store you always buy your fish from, or ask someone who knows about it).
A real Red Snapper has an exceptional and firm texture, it has a sweet, nutty flavor that fits perfectly with chilis and herbs, and it’s just perfect for grilling.

For the delicious accompaniments, you will need:
1) Fresh chilis from the store – we chose them in a very small size because the smaller they are, the spicier they are, and we love spices:
Incredibly spicy mini chilis
2) The legendary “Batata Harra” (i.e. Arabic for Spicy Potatoes), a recipe taught to us by Feddo, the  amazing chef of a tiny restaurant on a rock by the beach in Batroun, Lebanon (Johnny Beach is the name – for those of you who are interested). For this recipe, you will need:
– Potatoes cut in big cubes
– Fresh garlic cut in very small cubes
– Finely chopped Coriander
– Fresh Lemon juice
– Chili Powder
– Optional fresh chili (see photo above)
– Salt, Pepper
– Olive Oil
Fry the big potato cubes in olive oil until they look slightly brownish.
While you fry the potatoes, prepare the sauce: Mix the garlic, the coriander, half the lemon juice, salt and olive oil.
Once the potatoes are done, add the sauce and then sprinkle with chili powder (as much as you’d like). Add the other half of the lemon juice, salt again, and pepper, and enjoy the meal!
